Student Paced UnitsStudent Paced Units can be defined as a unit where students are timing out the unit and their learning to their own pace. This was accomplished in my study by having students choose their own novels and set their own reading schedule so that they can read the entire novel by the time that the unit completes. This was accomplished by the students filling out a reading calendar that paces out the book according to their own needs and reading paces. Further, students chose when to accomplish their assignments according to these schedules. A section of the reading calendar allowed for students to write in what assignment they finished that day.

Student Choice ProjectsStudent choice projects can best be defined as a project that a student has designed in order to best demonstrate learning over their chosen novel. Students decided how they best will show their learning from the novel. The student were then required to conference with the teacher and gain approval from the teacher in order to begin their project. This ensured that the students were sufficiently challenging themselves and demonstrating learning that is relevant and aligned with curriculum in accordance with state standards set by the Nebraska Department of Education.

Student Choice NovelsStudent choice novels is defined as a novel that is chosen by the student. The purpose being that the student were choosing a novel that suits their interest and that they take responsibility for. The students were responsible for ensuring that the novel is over 200 pages and that they read the entirety of the novel. The students chose their novels by visiting the school library and choosing their novel. The novel was then to be approved by the teacher to ensure rigor and length. Upon approval, students may check out the book and begin using it as their reading for the choice novel unit.
